HONG KONG students bring a 'special energy' to London Business School (LBS), associate dean, MBA programme, Julia Tyler  said.

Their ability to look to the east and west 'brings fresh insights into global business trends from which the whole school benefits', she said.

This year, 325 Chinese students, including those from Hong Kong, enrolled in the school's MBA programme, which is counted among the world's best.

Ms Tyler discusses what LBS, a top school with alumni in more than 100 countries, has to offer.

What's new at LBS?

For the first time we are offering a core course on Discovering Entrepreneurial Opportunities. We've reviewed the programme and identified a need - whatever career you get into - to add value by being entrepreneurial.

Any other changes?

Flexibility. With LBS you are choosing a top-ranked, international, sound MBA education. Today's programme can be tailored to meet your needs so that students can waive certain courses, study faster or slower or take a term off. It's a big investment, so you might as well make it fit you as well as it possibly can.

How long does it take?

If you're really determined, and want to give up your social life, you can finish the programme in 15 months. Most of our students take between 18 and 21 months. Whatever you do, you get the opportunity to learn a language, do a summer internship - a critical feature of our MBA - and go on an international exchange. It's just a question of how hard you work and how much you want to do.

What outcomes can I expect?

It's a great job market at the moment. Among our MBA class of 2006, 96 per cent found employment within three months. More to the point, they seem to be getting the jobs they want. One student I remember well has moved from HSBC to working in luxury goods at LVMH. It was her dream job - the MBA had given her what she wanted.

What won't students

find at LBS?

Boredom, sleep, or anything that's heavily involved in the public sector. If you want to work in civil service or government, we might not be the best school for you. But if you want to change your career, move forward or become an entrepreneur, then we can help you do it.

How do I enrol?

Firstly, be sure you want to do an MBA and that this is the right one for you. Secondly, just relax. There's a lot of hype about getting into MBAs, but if you know what you want to do and you have the basics (such as a good first degree and relevant quality experience) then think about the match and write down what you want. If you can't do your application in a weekend then possibly an MBA is not yet the place you should be.

The typical LBS student is ...

Apart from the obvious - bright, energetic, motivated, driven - they're seeking to change or speed up their career, or maybe to find themselves. We actually had a student who went from being a rocket scientist to working for L.E.K. consulting - I kid you not. They're people who want to make an investment in themselves, who recognise that education and development make sense in today's world. They're also hugely international and just get a buzz thinking of things global.



HK students have a lot to gain at LBS
