THE Community Chest is organising a gala evening on January 14 that had even the Governor gasping when he heard the ticket prices. At $15,000 a seat (which goes up to a staggering $150,000 a seat if you sit on the Pattens' table), the organisers believe the evening at Government House to celebrate the Community Chest silver jubilee must be one of the most expensive ever held. ''But all of the 200 tickets sold out anyway,'' co-chairperson of the organising committee Radhe Chellaram told us. The evening features a rather exclusive auction of a red Ferrari 348GT. Starting price will be $1.8 million, just less than the $2.13 million which, Ms Chellaram told us, is the price in the shops. ''But of course we hope to raise a lot more for the car than that,'' Ms Chellaram said, adding that the fund-raising target is $5 million. She is, however, convinced that the gods are on her side after ''a miracle happened'' yesterday. The invitations - in the form of a large champagne bottle-shaped candle - were modelled on those she had ordered for her brother-in-law's 50th birthday party last year. But this time, the suppliers failed to come up with the goods by the deadline. Thinking that she might have 20 or so left over from the other party, Ms Chellaram headed disconsolately down to the cellar . . . and to her amazement found about 150 of them left over. ''I called the supplier, who said he had only sent 130 in the first place, just enough for my brother-in-law's party. He checked his books and could find no record of having manufactured, let alone sent, 280 of the things. ''I can only think it was a miracle.''
