Officials have pledged to strengthen efforts to regulate the fund for relocating families for the Three Gorges Dam project following misappropriation scandals.

He Wenbin, head of the Three Gorges Dam Construction Committee's Supervision and Inspection Department, said officials at all levels should carefully check spending of the fund and rigorously forbid embezzlement or use of the money without an approved budget, Xinhua reported.

He was speaking at a relocation work conference for the dam project in Yichang , Hubei , at the weekend.

Last month, the National Audit Office probed the use of resettlement funding in 10 counties and districts in Hubei and Chongqing municipality last year and found 63 million yuan and 225 million yuan misused, respectively.

The money was used to open government-run businesses, pay off debts to other local departments, pay salaries in administrative departments, build offices and homes for people not involved in the resettlement project and to pay off bank loans.

Mr He said 96.7 per cent of misused funds in Chongqing and all misused funds in Hubei had been recovered.
