Firm eyes one or two asset deals to enhance supply chain and sales, especially for e-paper products

Solomon Systech (International), which makes semiconductors for electronic products that use visual displays, aims to buy one or two firms to improve its supply chain and sales, especially for its latest 'e-paper' products, thin displays used in handsets and watches.

The company, whose e-paper is included in Motorola's Motofone entry-level handsets, last year shipped 10 million units of the displays. It expects significant sales growth this year boosted by buyers in the Indian and South American markets attracted to the US$20 to US$30 Motofones.

E-paper uses a Solomon Systech-designed chip that consumes only a small amount of electricity as it shows only monochromatic, non-animated graphics.

'We can add a display to everything and have various applications, such as showing the temperature of drinks in glasses, product prices on the shelves of a supermarket or cash in Octopus smart cards,' said Humphrey Leung, chief executive of Solomon Systech.

'By adding a radio frequency tag on a product, a shopkeeper can change all the product prices at any time simply through a computer.'
