White

Hilton Auckland, Prince's Wharf, 147 Quay Street

It's easy to see why this eatery, perched over the sea, is called White. Its minimalist decor, from soft furnishings and marble fixtures right down to its walls, is stark white. But with the ocean seen through floor-to-ceiling picture windows and Auckland's harbour front in the other direction, White (above) never feels austere, merely stylish and relaxing. The menu comprises contemporary New Zealand fare, including lots of seafood - oysters are a mere NZ$3 (HK$16) each - and favourites such as cilantro lamb noisette with a shallot puree in a cinnamon jus (NZ$37). Pair the seafood with one of White's fruity champagne cocktails - perhaps the divine kaffir leaf and coconut milk.

The Grove

St Patrick's Square, Wyndham Street

Tucked away in a side street some distance from the harbour (but definitely worth visiting) is the glorious Grove. Its artichoke tartlet with caramelised onions (NZ$19) makes for a perfect starter, as does fish of the day on calamari risotto with prawn fritters (NZ$34). The service at the Grove is notably attentive and the wine list features a good selection of vintages for those keen to sample New Zealand's fine domestic grapes.
