Some of the city's most famous smokers have pledged to kick the habit following the introduction of the new no-smoking law this year.
Eastern district councillor Tsang Kin-shing, a smoker for more than 30 years, has made quitting a part of his New Year resolution. The 49-year-old said he had not bought a cigarette since January 1, the day the smoking ban started.
'There's almost nowhere to smoke now,' said Mr Tsang, who used to puff his way through 30 cigarettes a day.
The councillor said he had tried to quit three times before, without success. However, he is pretty confident of succeeding this time.
'It's not only my personal effort, but there is also my family's support plus a social atmosphere in favour of establishing a smoking-free environment, which will make it easier for me to keep away from tobacco,' he said.
Mr Tsang, chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese Importers' and Exporters' Association, decided to support the ban by not applying for exemption for the association's restaurant where he often treats guests.
'As a legislator, I have to adapt myself to the new law. After all, I am one of the people who passed it,' he said.
