Hot to trotters
Lunar New Year has become a perfect excuse for a good old rave, and on Monday punters have a choice of two big parties to welcome in the Year of the Pig.
Firstly, infamous British club Gatecrasher will be transforming Western Market in Sheung Wan into a den of hedonism, and leading the charge is British DJ Matt Darey, one of the pioneers of trance music in the 1990s.
Darey (below) is now ranked 51st on the DJ Mag list of the world's top 100 spinners and has earned much respect for his Euphoria trance series. Anyone present for the pre-millennium trance explosion will also remember his massive remixes of ATB's Till I Come, Binary Finary's 1998 and Li Kwan's Point Zero.
The busy Darey holds residencies in London, Sydney, Ibiza and Los Angeles, and Monday's show will conclude his five-date tour of China, where he's been pushing his new sound that journeys into breakbeat, house and even rock. The gig starts at 10pm and advance tickets are HK$250 from HMV, or HK$300 at the door.
More adventurous clubbers will be heading to Cyberport, where dynamic Melbourne duo LoStep will be dropping a live set of their progressive, beat-driven madness.
LoStep comprises Phil K (Phil Krokidis) and Luke Chable, who are revered Down Under as two of the nation's finest DJs. Separately, the guys have forged careers as producers of quality breakbeat as well as DJs, and as LoStep they've earned a formidable reputation for their intense live sets.
