Q What do you think of minibus services?
Contrary to some beliefs, the minibus services are excellent. They represent the efficient and accessible transport of Hong Kong.
Many times when I am stuck in Causeway Bay and need to leave for Stanley, the minibuses are awaiting my departure in a convenient area near Times Square. The more tiresome route is to walk a long distance to the standard bus stops or make two trips via the MTR and bus.
Thus, I am appalled to hear such criticisms of the minibuses. They not only charge very little, but they run throughout Hong Kong into areas that the standard bus lines do not reach as quickly, frequently or directly.
I can only slightly agree with Donna Shepherd's opinion (City, February 24) that minibus drivers are arrogant and dangerous. Yes, it's true I notice that these bus drivers may get a little too close for comfort to other cars and accelerate a bit too much, but I continue to feel safe. In fact, Hong Kong minibuses are now equipped with safety belts and large speedometers that allow passengers to follow their speed.
Overall, these buses have saved me countless hours, money and energy. The positive qualities certainly outweigh the negatives.
