Buyers have been advised to check carefully whether cars will qualify for a new tax concession for environmentally friendly vehicles.

The first registration tax concession of up to HK$50,000 would be available only for fuel-efficient and low-emission models recognised by the Environmental Protection Department, officials said.

Currently, 11 models are listed on the department website as satisfying these fuel and emissions standards and are being offered by authorised dealers in Hong Kong. Two of them are hybrids and the rest are petrol-driven vehicles.

There are also two models available through parallel imports but their specifications may be different because of regional variations.

'Individuals who order cars from overseas or parallel importers have to be more careful. They will not enjoy the tax incentives unless they obtain a valid certificate,' principal environmental protection officer Mok Wai-chuen said.

Mr Mok said the department would review the standards annually with reference to technological advancements, and advised car buyers not rush to take up the offer, as the concession was not a one-off.
