Children perform a welcome gesture at a Beijing primary school to improve etiquette in preparation for receiving overseas visitors to next year's Olympics in the capital.
And in another preparatory campaign, municipal officials say the city has formed enough sports committees to organise activities for every street in the capital, ensuring at least 60 per cent of residents will be doing some form of sport by next summer.
The Beijing Sports Bureau says the proportion of city residents playing sport at least three times a week for at least half an hour each time rose from 11.5 per cent in 1995 to 52.4 per cent in 2004, and the number continues to rise.
The bureau says the city has 6,000 sports venues and authorities will emphasise investment in similar facilities in surrounding rural villages this year.
