Limits on expansion at Lo Wu crossing dictate decision, say transport officials
There is no point allowing tour buses access to a new border checkpoint because passengers would have to take a train when they reach the mainland side, transport officials said yesterday.
They rejected accusations by lawmakers and tour bus operators that the rules for use of transport facilities at the Lok Ma Chau crossing were unfair to operators.
The crossing, opening in July, links a new KCRC spur line to the Shenzhen metro. Vehicles will continue using the adjoining road checkpoint.
Lawmakers and tour bus operators claim the government is unfairly favouring bus, minibus and taxi operators by allowing them to use the crossing's transport interchange.
Deputy Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works Annie Choi Suk-han told the Legislative Council's transport panel there were stringent geographical and traffic flow constraints governing construction of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation's Lok Ma Chau spur.
