Students in India have gone on a violent rampage after they were banned from cheating in exams.

More than 11,000 students in two districts of the east Indian state also boycotted their secondary school graduation exams.

The students turned against authorities late last month when friends and parents were stopped from illegally passing notes and books to them inside the examination halls.

Protests by the student candidates from 60 schools turned violent when some were caught copying material and their illegally smuggled books and notes were seized by teachers.

The students, sitting their final maths exams in the districts of Saharsa and Madhepura, reacted by boycotting the test and then attacked teachers.

'We tried to stop friends and parents of the students passing notes through windows as they were passing to help them cheat in the examination,' education official Ajit Jha said.

'On frisking we found that almost all the students were carrying books and photocopied notes hidden on their bodies. They refused to hand over the illegally smuggled study materials and attacked teachers and invigilators.'
