Rich pickings at licence plate auction
A licence plate bearing the numbers 1668 - which sounds similar to 'be rich all the way' in Cantonese - sold for HK$550,000 at the Transport Department's Lunar New Year auction yesterday. The plate, bought by a licence-plate trader, fetched the highest price of the 40 plates auctioned. Next came BB68 at HK$500,000 and XX3 at HK$405,000. Nearly HK$6 million was raised at the auction.
Driver held over crash
A 49-year-old truck driver was arrested for dangerous driving after his vehicle crashed into a minibus near traffic lights in Sham Shui Po. He was released on HK$5,000 bail. Five minibus passengers were slightly injured and taken to hospital.
Poverty commission to discuss fund for children
Commission on Poverty secretary Stephen Fisher said the government's proposed Child Development Fund aims to create development capital for children and encourage youngsters to develop a saving habit. Mr Fisher said HK$300 million had been set aside for the fund and the commission would discuss its detailed operation. He said a suggestion the government establish a child trust fund that would hold money for children's future education required more discussion since the proposal involved long-term funding.
