The Philippe Charriol Foundation Art Competition results were announced two days ago. What stood out this year?
Panel judge and Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre planning director Eddie Lui Fung-ngar:
'The submissions include paintings, sculptures and mixed media. The great thing this year is that artists are going back to basics in terms of techniques and the materials they use. The draughtsmanship brings a human touch to the work. It's good because hand work has been missing during the past decade, which has been dominated by installation and digital art.
'One of the winners is a sculpture of mixed materials in the shape of a tree. I like it because whether it's a tree or not is subject to your interpretation. 'This year, we reached a consensus on the top three winners - no disputes at all. I heard it's rare because judges usually have different opinions. The 40 shortlisted works are also consistent in quality and show influences from other cultures.'
