STAR apprentice Francis K.S. Lam won his first big feature event when bringing home Speedstar as a fairly comfortable winner of the Hong Kong Club Cup at Sha Tin yesterday. Lam, 20, went on to complete a double for himself when the rapidly-improving Gold Capture ran out a similarly cosy winner of the last. For Lam it was win number 12 in his first full season while trainer Peter Ng Bik-kuen now has 14 winners this campaign . Lam said: ''Speedstar is not a star horse and hung in a fair bit but he did well enough. ''My boss then told me to hold the reins a bit tighter to make sure this didn't happen with Gold Capture. He shifted in a little but he still won in good style.'' Speedstar scored by three quarters of a length from Fighting Strike who found the straight 1,000 metres too sharp but managed to run home strongly to deny California Prince second place. Flying Supreme's apprentice looked unable to get the best out of him in this contest. He could go better in sprints when a senior rider jumps aboard. Gold Capture could well win again as he scored by 11/2 lengths from a similarly young, improving type in Lam Hung-fie's Planet. Derek Cruz's Gun Sin stayed on strongly for third and is worth noting for a similar staying event.
