Doctors dismiss mercury connection to autism
Mercury poisoning, which can be caused by eating too much seafood, is not related to autism, a team of pediatricians says. 'It seems there is a misbelief among parents with autistic children - their children are diagnosed with autism because they have high mercury levels. But, in fact, mercury and autism are not related,' said Daniel Ng Kwok-keung of Kwong Wah Hospital's paediatrics department. A paper on the subject by Dr Ng and colleagues was published in Pediatrics International last month.
Police nab man over robbery and assault
A man was arrested yesterday for robbing and wounding a 72-year-old driver, who picked him up in Wan Chai at about 2am and was told to head for Mount Davis. The passenger grabbed the driver's neck when they were near Mount Davis Path and Victoria Road. The driver escaped but was chased and punched by the man. The man was stopped and arrested by police, who had been patrolling the area because of similar robberies.
Dengue fever alert after Thailand case confirmed
The Centre for Health Protection has issued a dengue fever alert following confirmation of an imported case. A 63-year-old man in Tai Po developed fever, muscle pain and tiredness on February 25. He was admitted to hospital on March 1 and discharged on March 7. He had been in Thailand between February 17 and 25.
