Trial will test public acceptance of 'cleaner, more durable and secure note'

Plastic HK$10 notes will go on a trial as early as June, circulating alongside the existing notes and coin, as foreshadowed by the Post on December 29 last year.

With two HK$10 notes already in circulation - green ones issued by the banks and purple ones by the government - plus the HK$10 coin, there will be four units of the humble denomination in circulation.

The new polymer note is seen as more durable and harder to forge than paper money which, despite its name, is made of cotton fibre.

Financial Secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen said the trial was aimed at finding out whether the community would accept plastic notes.

'Experience in countries that have introduced polymer notes suggests that they are cleaner, more durable and secure,' Mr Tang said. 'They are also more environmentally friendly, since they last longer and can be recycled for other use.'
