WHEN EXECUTIVES assume management responsibilities for the first time, they are likely to make two common mistakes.

The first is to think the best way to improve overall performance is by asserting authority, laying down the law and resorting to criticism and warnings to keep staff up to the mark.

The second is to doubt the ability and efficiency of others, and start believing that the only sure way of getting something done is to do it oneself.

Both approaches ignore the fact that most employees want to do a great job, to be recognised for it and to feel they are contributing. Most employees are looking for the chance to test themselves and excel in their field.
