''The International Chinese Language Diary Writing Competition'' invites all Chinese primary and secondary school students, whether they are living on the mainland, in Hong Kong or Taiwan, or have emigrated to Canada or America, to submit one or more entries from their diaries.

The contest will be the first of its kind ever held and is the result of co-operation between two popular youth magazines in Hong Kong and China - the Hong Kong Breakthrough Junior Magazine and Beijing Dong Fong Shao Nian Magazine.

The organisers expect millions of participants and see the contest as a good chance for cultural and language exchange.

''Over 1,000 prizes will be given out for the junior and senior sections of the competition,'' said Breakthrough Junior Magazine 's editor-in-chief Lam Chick-sum, who attended a meeting in Beijing last month to discuss the details of the competition.

The contest is divided into two sections: primary students (Primary Two to Six) and secondary students (Form One to Seven). Over 1,000 prizes will be awarded.

Each participant can submit one or more diary entries of no more than 1,000 words, on any topic.
