Three more fake HK$1,000 notes were found in Macau by 4pm yesterday, taking the total of such notes found in the city over the past week to 232.

In Hong Kong, police found 110 fake HK$1,000 notes yesterday, taking the total to 1,228 in the past 11 days. Four more people were arrested.

The police hotline had received 411 inquiries by yesterday evening.

After admitting a miscalculation, Macau police revised the number of fake notes found in the city by Wednesday upwards to 229. A police spokesman said the discovery of 24 notes was overlooked on Wednesday.

'The first wave of fake notes, in which hundreds of them were thrown into circulation, has died down,' said a Macau police spokesman. 'Now that people have turned vigilant, the number of cases has started to drop.'

Macau police said it was very likely that all the recently discovered notes were churned out by the same forgers.
