Diesel vehicle owners told not to be too hasty
Owners of old diesel vehicles are advised not to scrap them before April 1, when the government will start processing applications for replacement grants, an official said yesterday. Under the HK$3 billion scheme to phase out pre-Euro and Euro I commercial vehicles, owners have to scrap them before filing applications with the Transport Department. But the grants would not be offered if the vehicles are scrapped before April 1.
Fraudsters who offered big returns jailed
A pair of fraudsters who swindled 450 people out of HK$4 million in a pyramid scheme that promised massive returns of up to 5,500 per cent were jailed yesterday. The District Court sentenced Tsui Chi-kin, 37, the scheme's mastermind, and his employee Lan Hung, 46, to four years and 21/2 years respectively. The pair were convicted of a count of conspiracy to defraud customers between August 2004 and April 2005.
Couple held in drugs raid
Police arrested a married couple and seized HK$220,000 worth of drugs at their house in Sai Sha Road, Sai Kung. Officers believe the house was a packaging centre. The drugs seized included cocaine, cannabis and Ecstasy.
