Recent land disputes that have resulted in violence:

Dongzhou village  in Shanwei,  Guangdong

Police shoot dead at least three villagers on December 6, 2005  as  villagers  protest over a land grab. Riots have continued  as local officials failed to resolve land disputes.

Dingzhou  , Hebei province

Six villagers are killed and 144 injured on June 11, 2005 when more than 260 armed gangsters descend on farmers refusing to surrender 25 hectares of their land to an electronics factory in Shenyou village.  A local court sentences four people to death and Dingzhou party secretary He Feng  to life in prison for their role in the  crackdown.  Villagers  continue their protests as local officials  refuse to return their land.

Sanshan village,  Foshan , Guangdong

On January 18 this year, the municipal government sends  more than 1,000 riot police to clear villagers demonstrating over officials' seizure of 1,200 hectares of farmland  for  a manufacturing complex.  On May 31, 2005, local officials used 4,000  policemen and security officers to  clear crops,  causing villagers to lose at least 8 million yuan.
