Donald Tsang Yam-kuen yesterday pulled out the stops to maximise his support in today's chief executive election, phoning undecided voters in the hope of increasing his margin of victory over Alan Leong Kah-kit.
Mr Leong, the first candidate to force a contested election for chief executive election since 1997, faces certain defeat when Election Committee members cast their ballots this morning on Lantau Island; 795 are eligible to vote between 9am and 11am at the AsiaWorld Expo at Chek Lap Kok.
Speaking to more than 200 supporters on the Ping Tin public housing estate in Lam Tin where he first announced his candidacy, Mr Leong vowed to continue his fight for universal suffrage in 2012 after today's vote.
He called on Election Committee members who nominated him to cast their ballots in his favour.
'For Election Committee members who nominated Donald Tsang, their use of blank votes tomorrow will perhaps be the most effective protest against the system,' he said.
'However, for those who support me, I truly hope that they can use their vote to affirm the meaning of my participation in this election.'
The Civic Party legislator spent the day gathering signatures for a petition in support of universal suffrage.
