I REFER to recent letters on ''local racism''.
Expatriates in Hong Kong feel they are discriminated against by local Chinese. Expat civil servants are upset by the localisation law, while Filipino maids complain of ill treatment by Chinese employers.
Being a British colony it is hardly surprising to find a predominance of expat officers in the various Hong Kong Government departments , particularly at senior levels.
It should, however, be noted that the expat population in Hong Kong is less than five per cent, while the top government posts occupied by them exceed 20 per cent.
As for domestic helpers, occasional complaints about sexual molestation by male employers, physical torture and inadequate food supplies are excessively reported, while complaints lodged by their employers are ignored most of the time.
Nevertheless, when Hong Kong's Chinese population complains it is considered discriminatory and attacked from all sides.
