Pundit sees wisdom in learning Putonghua

World-famous commodity pundit Jim Rogers' investment advice is simple. Buy oil, or any other commodity for that matter, and make sure your kids learn Putonghua.

Mr Rogers, who has turned to globetrotting and making observations on the state of the global economy as he does so, delivered his signature folksy views on money and markets to the Credit Suisse investment conference yesterday while guests gnawed on B-grade beef.

To begin with, he urged people to go home and make babies, advice that drew a hearty laugh from Hong Kong's money-grubbing but loveless bankers. 'It's a heck of a lot of fun. And having the kids is fun, too,' said the 64-year-old father of a three-year-old daughter.

By Mr Rogers' account, his daughter has the money sense that most of the world lacks, and by teaching her Putonghua he hopes to prepare her for life in a 21st century dominated by China. She's selling US dollars and keeps her money in a euro-denominated Swiss bank account, and she's invested solely in commodities.

'You're never gonna get rich by diversifying,' he said.
