Lijiang tourists flee as 20 wounded
A 15-year-old Anhui youth who was visiting the world-renowned ancient town of Lijiang , in Yunnan province , was still in serious condition yesterday after sustaining brain damage in an attack on Sunday by his knife-wielding tour guide.
The tour guide, identified as Xu Minchao from Jilin's Rime Travel agency, wounded 15 tourists and five city residents in the attack - two of them seriously - but the motive for the violence was unclear.
A seven-year-old boy who was stabbed in the neck was in stable condition, according to an official from the Lijiang Municipal People's Hospital.
Authorities said Xu, a 25-year-old Heilongjiang native, went on the rampage with a kitchen knife after he quarrelled with a Kunming Dajia Travel agency tour guide over an itinerary for a travel group arriving in the city on Sunday.
Xu took the knife from a nearby silverware store located along Sifang Street - the resort's most famous spot - before stabbing the shop's owner and fleeing. He then attacked people in the street and ran to a secluded lane where he was caught after about 20 minutes by police called in by tourists.
A manager of the Ancient Town Bar said about a dozen people ran into his bar around 4pm on Sunday.
