Red Road
Starring: Kate Dickie, Tony Curran, Martin Compston
Director: Andrea Arnold
The film: Andrea Arnold's award-winning film revolves around CCTV worker Jackie (Kate Dickie), who observes one of the more impoverished districts in Glasgow through a network of surveillance cameras spread across the city.
Her godlike powers to watch over nearly every occurrence in the city are put to the test with the chance sighting of some back-alley dealings involving a man from her past. Jackie is forced to confront both him and her inner demons in one the city's toughest neighbourhoods.
Arnold's approach rivals that of controversial filmmaker Michael Haneke - and it's not just because of the grainy, hand-held camera style. Her ingenuity comes from telling the story at a glacial pace, dropping minor hints at the bigger picture without resorting to the easy option of flashbacks and drawn-out dialogue.
