Sir Sidney Gordon 1917-2007
Sir Sidney Samuel Gordon, a former China Light and Power Company chairman, government power broker, charity worker and energy industry pioneer, died on Wednesday at the Adventist Hospital. He was 89.
Sir Sidney was honoured with a Grand Bauhinia Medal in 1999 for his distinguished public and community service.
Upon hearing of his death, Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen said: 'Sir Sidney has a long record of dedicated public service and he will be remembered for his contribution to Hong Kong. I wish to offer my deepest condolences to all members of his family.'
An accountant by trade, Sir Gordon arrived in Hong Kong shortly after the second world war and worked at Lowe, Bingham & Matthews, where he came into contact with the powerful Lawrence Kadoorie, whose family was the major shareholder of China Light & Power - later renamed CLP Power.
Sir Sidney joined Sir Elly Kadoorie & Sons in 1970 and was appointed deputy chairman of CLP, rising to chairman in 1991, a position he held until December 1996.
