Relatives of the survivors staged all-night vigils at the two hospitals at which they are being cared for - the Caritas Medical Centre and the Kwong Wah Hospital.

Eight survivors of the arson attack - five women and three men - were still in a critical condition and being kept alive by ventilators. A man and a woman were believed to be in a very critical stage.

The ninth survivor, 32-year-old Mui Yin-yee, has improved slightly and has been taken off the ventilator, although her condition was still described as poor.

All the patients were being fed saline and dextrose infusions through an intravenous drip.

Lai Bik-ching, the nurse in charge at Caritas Medical Centre where six people were being treated, said: ''There has been no improvement in the condition of any of the patients here and it is still difficult to say whether or not any will survive.'' Just half an hour before she died, there was a sudden improvement in the condition of Tsang Liu Pui-kei, 26, who was three months pregnant.

The hospital informed her husband of her critical condition at 8 pm on Monday. Doctors were not optimistic about her chances of survival.
