As the Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery open its doors to the public today, 10 years of hard work by the government and the New Territories community comes to fruition.
And few are prouder than Tang Tat-yan, 50. He is a member of the 26th generation of the clan that has lived around Ping Shan for 800 years and donated one of the gallery's most prized exhibits - the traditional bridal sedan chair in which his mother was carried at her wedding.
'I felt quite excited and proud when I saw the chair being placed in this museum,' said Mr Tang.
'It means this old item doesn't die out with time. I hope that visitors will learn more about the past from this exhibition.'
Pride of place in the gallery goes to a red-embroidered Qing dynasty (1644-1911) silk birthday hanging dating to the 19th century.
It is believed to be the only one of its kind in Hong Kong, said Esa Leung Kit-ling, executive secretary of the Antiquities and Monuments Office.
