Jinnan is a hilly section of wide streets in the centre of Shibuya, Tokyo, dominated by department stores and karaoke and entertainment centres. It's packed from morning to night with youths who flock to the district (below left) looking for fast fashion and cheap fun: 'Shibuya kids' (below right), with extreme tans and heavy make-up, are a Japanese oddity seldom found outside the area. Jinnan is stuffed with shops selling fashionable men's apparel and accessories while women will also find a number of stores that appeal.

One of the best department stores here is the youth-oriented chain 0101 (pronounced Marui; 1-21-3 Jinnan, tel: 81 3 3464 0101). It offers a selection of Japan's best-selling contemporary fashion and accessories. Floor after floor is packed with knee-length socks, plaid skirts and gothic yet cute handbag decorations: true Japanese streetwear. The perma-fashionable white socks seen on every local schoolgirl start at 800 yen (HK$50) a pair.

Nearby, 109 Building dominates Shibuya and attracts followers of gyuru fashion, typified by the tribes of glossy women with dyed blonde hair and deep orange tans who shop at this mall. To capitalise on the presence of the men in these women's lives who also subscribe to the same aesthetic - sun-bed tans, shaggy haircuts and sharp Italian-inspired designer suits - 109-2 (1-23-10 Jinnan, tel: 81 3

3477 8111) appeared. Frilly white shirts, chunky silver jewellery and stay-pressed suits are the sartorial mainstays, and prices are reasonable. Shirts start at 2,000 yen.

Lads searching for something less ubiquitous should head to And A Homme (1-4-8 Jinnan, tel: 81 3 5728 6685), a stylishly designed store housing a mixture of lesser known US and European brands and lifestyle items.
