Review called to protect consumers
A basket of statutes related to consumer protection will be reviewed in coming months, as authorities seek to salvage Hong Kong's reputation as a shopping destination for mainland tourists.
The legislative move is part of wide-ranging measures announced by Secretary for Economic Development and Labour Stephen Ip Shu-kwan, in conjunction with the consumer watchdog and law-enforcement agencies.
It follows recent controversies sparked by a spate of reports, including some in mainland media, on fake and overpriced goods bought by mainland tourists. Some also complained of coercive shopping.
The legislative exercise will determine the amendments necessary to crack down on offenders.
The review will include the Unconscionable Contracts Ordinance, Trade Descriptions Ordinance, Sale of Goods Ordinance, Weights and Measures Ordinance, Theft Ordinance and the Supply of Services (Implied Terms) Ordinance.
