After years in a school uniform, dressing to look cool on campus can be a challenge. Here are Hoi-lam's top tips

Name: Cheung Hoi-lam

Age: 22

Ms Cheung studies textiles and clothing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She won the Young Designers Alumni Club Prize for contemporary day-wear in February. She created simple and elegant designs with the theme of Monthly Salary -  clothes for men with office jobs.

Although she usually designs casual or business wear,  she sometimes makes evening gowns for her friends.

What are the fashion trends among university students this summer?

I think fashion here follows London. Tight trousers are in for men.   Try pairing loose or even over-sized tees with tight trousers. Complete the look with sandals.

If you like casual, comfortable clothes,  try different kinds of  pants, such as jeans or three-quarter pants. Wear eye-catching footwear, such as a pair of red sneakers, to add colour to your outfit.

Girls can continue wearing large, bright accessories and stockings.

Where do you usually go shopping?

I like shopping in Tsim Sha Tsui because it's close to school. Rise Shopping Arcade is one of my favourites. I especially like second-hand shops. You can find affordable accessories, such as handbags.

If you don't want to spend too much,  shopping malls in Mong Kok, such as King Wah Centre, offer good bargains. Although the boutiques there are small, they have  unique styles.

What are the hot colours for summer?

Girls should wear clothes with one or two bold colours.  Try to mix and match accessories and leggings. Blue, particularly fluorescent blue, is a hot colour for boys this summer.

Do's

- Pay attention to  detail and give your outfit extra style with accessories such as bracelets and necklaces.  Fashion is not just about clothes.

Don'ts

- Expensive clothes aren't always  better than cheaper brands. Spend time strolling through small malls  and quirky stores. You will find cool accessories or clothes  at reasonable prices.
