The social calendar last Thursday included something old and something new. New was Joyce Boutique's reopening.

The chic emporium has added a third floor at the New World Tower and the ribbon-cutting caused a gridlock on the Queen's Road Central pavement. It got so crowded that numerous guests were turned away from the 5.30pm launch.

The star of the event was Japanese design legend Yohji Yamamoto who, despite being mobbed, patiently signed autographs and posed for photos until he was rescued by Joyce boss Adrienne Ma.

Afterwards, the cocktail crowd moved en masse to the Landmark for something old - Louis Vuitton's exhibition 'Travels & Travellers', with its collection of classic and speciality trunks. Among the unique cases on show are one that folds out into a bed made for a 19th-century adventurer and another made with a desk for conductor Leopold Stokowski.

In contrast to the old trunks, it was someone new who drew the most attention. Ten-year-old Gouw Ian Iskandar (above), who last week won best supporting actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, is admittedly an odd choice for the event's celebrity.

After all, how much does a kid really care about luggage? Judging by his bored and fidgeting demeanour, not much.
