Campus Cool

After years in a school uniform, dressing to look cool on campus can be a challenge. Here are Isabel Tong's top tips

Name: Isabel Tong

Age: 25

Tong works at sports goods company Li Ning as a sportswear designer. She won two awards at the prestigious Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest 2007: the Avant-Garde Collections' prize and the Milk Magazine Prize for Most Innovative Design.

She has been working in the fashion industry for two years and has won several other awards, including second prize in the 2005 Singapore Fashion Week's Next Asia Designer Contest.

What are the fashion trends this summer?

Sportswear. I'm not trying to promote my company, but sporty styles will be hot this summer. It's relatively easy for guys, but for girls there are a lot of choices. They can even wear a dress or a skirt with sporty elements, such as mesh fabric, thick stripes or spots.

What are this season's hot colours?

Sharp and metallic colours are in, especially for footwear. Pale colours have been the trend in footwear for a while, but it's changing now. Whether you are buying sneakers or sandals, pick shiny, colourful ones.

How do you suggest young people learn to dress in their own style?

Choose items of clothing that match your personality. What you wear should reflect your character.

For example, if you are an active, energetic and carefree person, don't force yourself into prim and proper clothes.

Young people can change their style, but it's better if they do it slowly. Don't blindly follow fashion fads or copy what other people wear - follow your own judgment.

Where do you usually go shopping?

Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay. You can easily find fashionable clothes at these locations. I also go to as many boutiques as possible. You will always find surprises if you're willing to spend the time.

Do's

- Hairstyle plays an important role in your overall look. Change your hairstyle to match different outfits

Don'ts

- Don't stick to brand names or stores, mix and match according to your own style
