A survey conducted in February and March by San Po Yan, the student newspaper of the department of journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University, has revealed that university students are not concerned about what's happening in the world.
A total of 443 students from the eight tertiary institutes were surveyed on their newspaper-reading habits.
Results showed that 118 (26.6 per cent) students do not read the newspaper every day.
Among those who do, 182 spend less than 30 minutes browsing through the pages. Thirty-two students said they skim the newspaper in five minutes.
About 53 per cent read local news, 45 per cent read about politics, and less than 10 per cent are interested in financial news.
The department's assistant professor To Yiu-ming said the results are not surprising.
