A high-level leadership team headed by Premier Wen Jiabao has been set up to tackle serious industrial pollution and save energy around the country, mainland media said. The decision to form the team was made yesterday at a State Council Standing Committee conference on controlling industrial pollution. According to Xinhua, the conference, chaired by Mr Wen, said the rapid development of heavily polluting industries with high energy demands had created a serious situation on the mainland. It concluded there was not enough awareness of the problems, administrative responsibilities were unclear, measures were not well aligned, policies were loose, investment in environmental issues was not substantial and co-ordination between agencies was not effective. Departments had to make pollution reduction the key focus of macro controls, and ensure economic development was based on energy conservation and pollution control.
