Apart from determining which direction your house faces, there are other issues to consider: for instance, the orientation in which direction you sleep. This is determined by the way your head - not your feet - points when you lie in your bed.

In the kitchen, fung shui masters assess the position of the stove from the wall behind it. Don't assume the direction of a cooker is determined by the orientation of its knobs as these can be on a different plane. Measuring the direction in which an electrical cord exits your rice cooker, kettle or microwave oven has no basis in classical fung shui, so don't place kitchen appliances in impractical positions to tap favourable directions.

With regard to favourable sitting positions, when at your desk or dining table, some masters emphasise the direction in which you face, while others place credence on your position at the table. Regardless of which theory you follow, it is most important to consider features such as doors, windows or passageways and avoid sitting with them behind you. Keep everything in perspective. There's no need to be so concerned with directions that you worry about which way your toilet faces.
