A veteran Taiwanese journalist was shot dead in an attempted robbery at his home in Johannesburg after exchanging fire with the intruders, sources close to the police investigation said yesterday.
Gino Feng Jung-sheng confronted a robber near the kitchen after hearing noises in his house on Wednesday evening, said Xu Peihua , secretary-general of the South Africa Chinese Community and Police Co-operation Centre, a group set up to help ethnic Chinese in Johannesburg in security matters.
Feng, who was 47, was editor and publisher of China Express, a local Chinese-language newspaper.
He and the intruder opened fire at the same time. The journalist was shot through the heart and the robber suffered head wounds.
Mr Xu said Feng was dead when police arrived 10 minutes later.
The intruder, who was taken to hospital and placed under police observation, was in critical condition last night.
'The investigation revealed there were two other robbers and they tried to flee with the wounded one but had to abandon him at the door. The police are still searching for them,' Mr Xu said.
