His wife, Xu Jiehua said Yixing police had refused to let her or a lawyer from Beijing visit Wu, who was arrested on April 13.

'Officials said the order was given by higher-ranking leaders because my husband's case is the most critical one,' she said.

She said local officials had not only stopped her from visiting her husband, but also threatened and harassed her since his arrest.

'They came to my home every day to warn me not to speak to overseas media,' Ms Xu said. 'They also threatened to detain me if I refused to co-operate.'
