Feist

The Reminder

It's often a pity when indie artists turn mainstream.

Not so Leslie Feist. A member of the Toronto rock  group Broken Social Scene,  she has  recorded an album that old fans will respect and newcomers should adore.

With 12  charming original songs and one daring cover, it insinuates itself into favourites territory quite easily.  Feist seems to do what she does effortlessly,  giving listeners restrained but robust songs, some of which are pretty, others ethereal, jazzy or playful.

So Sorry  points to Norah Jones' style but is less soporific, and sets the  tone for The Reminder, which chronicles love abandoned and rediscovered.

Next is I Feel It All, a catchy song that should receive heavy radio play because of its uplifting, boppy beat, aided by glockenspiel, organ and Feist on guitar.

Among the best tracks is How My Heart Behaves, which has Nick Cave's lugubrious plod but is somehow invigorated  by Feist's heavenly vocals.

The fun, simple 1234 should also make it onto iPods as a decent singalong tune.   Then there's Feist's take on Nina Simone's Sea Lion Woman, a traditional folk song she  makes her own with an innovative rendition.

The Canadian's version would surely have coaxed a smile even from the famously grumpy Simone.  The Reminder demonstrates  Feist's many talents and shows why obscurity may no longer be

an option.
