Quarter of HK women see themselves as maids
Almost a quarter of Hong Kong women see their role in their family as a 'maid', a study found. The survey of 1,079 women aged 25 to 45 also found 70 per cent believed having a successful career was vital to boosting their social status. Most respondents believed women should be independent and enjoy the same salaries as men working at the same level. In addition, more than 70 per cent said having children with filial loyalty was crucial to being a happy mother. The survey was carried out by RTHK and City University.
Inquest ordered into death of psychiatric centre inmate
An inquest will be held into the death of a prisoner after he was found unconscious in a government-run mental treatment centre. The 46-year-old, who had been convicted of manslaughter, was certified dead in hospital. He was ordered detained indefinitely in Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre in the New Territories in 1994 under the Mental Health Ordinance. After being found on Friday morning, the prisoner received first aid and then was sent to Tuen Mun Hospital, a spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said. His relatives have been informed.
OpenU seeks TV channel
The president of the Open University, John Leong Chi-yan, urged the government to grant a television channel to the university so that it could give long-distance lectures. He said the university had provided various long-distance courses since it was established in 1989, but Hong Kong people generally still did not accept this study model.
