Hong Kong's  first roller skating multi-learning centre  opened at the weekend  at Tseung Kwan O Park Central shopping mall.

The centre allows youngsters to learn skating, English and art  at the same venue.

John Wing is a 6,000-square-foot multi-discipline learning and educational centre  with an indoor roller skating rink.

Classes, which include figure roller skating and roller hockey, are open  to children aged three or above.

There are also skating classes for adults.

John Chu Tak-keung, one of the founders, said that  most Hong Kong people  have a negative attitude  towards roller skating.

'There are only outdoor roller skating rinks in Hong Kong, and many parents find them dirty and unsafe.'

He hopes that the new and modern skating rink will change  people's view of the sport.

The rink is surrounded by glass,  which allows parents to watch their children taking classes.

In addition to roller skating, the centre offers  other classes, such as design, comic art, sculpture, English conversation  and phonetics.

Ten year-old Joey Chan from the Po Leung Kuk Grandmont Primary School takes roller skating classes as well as art classes.

'Roller skating is so much fun. I've  been learning it for a long time, and now I'm  learning figure skating,' he said.

Mr Chu believes that the learning centre can  help children's all-round development.

'Skating is good exercise. It trains  your balance.

'It also teaches  children to cope with difficulties,' said

Mr Chu,  a former vice-captain of the Hong Kong Ice Hockey team.

'Roller skating can also help children develop discipline, especially children who come from rich families  or are spoiled by their parents.

'Skating  stresses obedience. Children have to obey the coach and co-operate with others.'

Park Central  believes that the opening of the roller skating multi-learning centre will increase customer flow and business, as parents will  go shopping when their children are taking classes.

The centre  will  help make the shopping mall  a place for family fun.
