One of the first things that stands out in Fracture is Mychael and Jeff Danna's overwrought score. It's as if, even in the least dramatic scenes, sweeping musical gestures are needed to rouse viewers. It's probably apposite: the film has flashes of originality and some engaging performances, but Fracture drags its feet and the suspense drains from what could have been a taut legal thriller.
The story promises much, revolving around a battle of wits between wily aeronautical engineer Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins), who shoots his adulterous wife at point blank range at home and is swiftly arrested at the scene, and Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling), a brash young prosecutor seeking to wrap up the case quickly before leaving for the big money of corporate law.
What seems to be a straightforward case, on which Beachum spends less and less time as he ponders the decor of his future office, is soon thrown into disarray.
