Two government backbenchers have landed in hot water after making sexist remarks during a debate in parliament last week, sparking calls for an apology and punishment. Leading the charge is a coalition of women backed by Nori Abdullah, the only daughter of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, and Shahrizat Jalil, the minister for women's affairs. The controversy started last week, when opposition lawmaker Fong Poh Kuan criticised the government after water leaked through the roof of the newly renovated parliament building. Government backbencher Mokhtar Radin retorted: 'What's the big deal ... you also leak every month.' He was joined by colleague Said Yusof who repeated Mokhtar's words. Both have refused to apologise, saying it was a 'small matter'. Opposition lawmakers demanded parliament censure the two but the ruling National Front has refused describing the offending words as 'passing remarks'. About 200 women demonstrated outside Mr Abdullah's office.
