ICAC bugging pair must face new hearing into bribery charges

Wong Hung-ki and Shum Chiu, accused of offering HK$1.9 million in bribes to housing officials and using false purchase orders to hide the alleged crime, have lost their appeal against their case being reheard. The two walked free in August 2005 after Deputy Judge Julia Livesey ruled the Independent Commission Against Corruption had breached the constitutional right to confidential legal advice by bugging conversations between suspects and their lawyers. The government succeeded in overturning the decision in a judicial review.

Mechanic guilty on arms charge

A mechanic was found guilty of unlawfully possessing a gun magazine and more than 100 rounds of ammunition found by police in the boot of his car in a search in Tin Shui Wai. Wong Chun-yim, 53, had pleaded not guilty in the District Court to possessing arms and ammunition without a licence. Wong was remanded in custody pending a background report for sentencing on June 5.

Ex-nursery head denies scam

The former principal of a nursery school has denied soliciting HK$180,000 from parents and a child-care worker. The Independent Commission Against Corruption alleged Karen Tsoi Ching-yin, 35, of Ng Sheung Lan Memorial Nursery School, asked for a HK$60,000 loan from a subordinate for helping her stay at the school, Eastern Court heard. Tsoi is also accused of defrauding parents of HK$120,000.
