Shanghai has turned the flamboyant chief of Formula One racing in China, Yu Zhifei , and three government officials over to the courts for prosecution on charges of corruption.

Authorities also have formally stripped Yu of his posts and Communist Party membership for alleged involvement in a huge graft case involving misuse of the city's pension fund.

Yu was the general manager of the Shanghai International Circuit Management and Development Co, which manages Formula One in China.

Former head of Shanghai's western Changning district Chen Chao-xian and the former chairman of Shanghai's State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, Ling Baoheng , have also been turned over to the judiciary in relation to the pension fund case.

This is the second group of officials to face prosecution in the pension case, following nine others charged in March. No judgments or trial dates have been announced.

Separately, Xinhua reported that Yin Guoyuan , former deputy director of the Shanghai Housing and Land Administration, has lost his party membership and will be prosecuted. Taking away the party status is typically a precursor to criminal punishment.
