Secondary school teachers work an average of 68.9 hours a week, or 13.8 hours a day in a five-day work week, a study has found. A survey of 225 out of 28,634 secondary school teachers in the city was conducted by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Hong Kong Catholic Diocese. It found that on an average day, teachers were spending only 3.5 of all these hours teaching. Project officer Paul Ng Wai-kit said the high workload led to stress, high blood pressure, heart disease and problems with mental health - and degraded the quality of teaching.
