Leaders' talks in Germany 'likely'
Mainland China and Japan's top leaders are preparing for a likely meeting on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Germany next month to consolidate the rapprochement between their countries.
President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are expected to discuss a range of bilateral issues including North Korea's nuclear programme and a dispute over gas and oil exploration in the East China Sea, Kyodo News Agency reported yesterday, quoting unnamed government sources.
The Hu-Abe meeting has not been officially confirmed by either side. 'We are trying to co-ordinate a meeting, and nothing has been decided at this stage,' Japan's top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki, was quoted as saying.
In Beijing, the Foreign Ministry yesterday declined to confirm the report.
'The related arrangements are still under consultation and we will release information as it comes to hand, including the matter you raised,' spokeswoman Jiang Yu said.
