Coalition wants new bureau for technology and innovation

A newly formed coalition of information technology experts and academics has expressed disappointment with Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen's planned reshuffle of government bureaus. The coalition, whose members include former security chief Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, says it 'notes with dismay' that technology policy appears not to be a focus of the future commerce and economic development bureau. In a 'manifesto' advertisement to be placed in major newspapers today, the coalition says the proposed reorganisation contrasts sharply with the policy of the central government, which places technology at the heart of the country's development strategy. The coalition urges the government to designate a bureau to assume responsibility for technology and innovation.
